To me the Makanda Project goes to the very heart of building community in Boston. Having their concerts when the community can access them - at night - and where the community coes together - at the Roxbury library - is so important. Please preserve this community gem's night time concert series at our library.John Jewett (Jamaica Plain, 2025-07-23)

I am a musician who has been involved with music as long as I can remember, have been playing trumpet since 10y/o, and jazz since 12 y/o. I am now a college student in Boston and play with my university's jazz band. I have a strong conviction about music education and access for people of all ages, and I believe that it is important to recognize and keep alive the culture, history, and significance of jazz as a rich and beautiful genre of music. Finally, I believe creating music with and for others is a powerful way to foster community, spread hope, and see the humanity in the world, which is so needed in the world today.Allison Eidt (Wilton, 2025-07-24)

I have had the privilege of attending Makanda concerts at the Roxbury Branch for more than 10 years, and find them to be the most community supporting events that I have ever attended. Please allow them to continue!Julia Osborne (Winchester, 2025-07-24)
#224
These concerts in this particular setting are such a pleasure & an exciting, living, breathing example of a community gathering at its very finest. What a shame it would be to force the Makanda Project to avoid the Roxbury Branch Library in the evenings, when so many lovers of art & culture are able to gather & celebrate the magic of creating & the wonderful city in which we live.Eric Shoag (Jamaica Plain, 2025-07-24)

Having these concerts in the evening at the Roxbury branch library is a beautiful, enormously bonding, multicultural experience.Robert Frank (Boston, 2025-07-25)
#235
It's important to the community to have access to these cultural events. It would be a diservice to lose them because of a policy change due to controversy re: when an unrelated event -June 2024 Witherspoon Gala- ran late. At the Makanda Project concerts the patrons have always been respectful of the library and supported the Friends of the Library in their fundraisingGlen Manseau (Boston, 2025-07-25)
#236
The public library is a fantastic venue for community music events such as the Makanda Project and it would be a shame to lose this venue. I have also observed BPL bending the policy regarding events which extend beyond the library's regular hours, for example, a theatre production several months ago which was held over the course of several evenings. I have to wonder if this decision is really about library policy or about this event happening in Roxbury.Irene Glassman (Boston, 2025-07-25)
#238
The Makanda Projects Saturday night concerts are among the best things happening in our city. They are diverse, respectful, and showcase some of the finest jazz musicians in the US. The library setting is the perfect venue, and I’m proud of our City for hosting it. Please continue the Saturday night concerts at the library.Judith Coughlin (Roslindale, 2025-07-25)

I have been in a number of public libraries in Eastern Europe over the past few years. Their success at expanding their programs and their reach has generated enthusiastic participation and been instrumental in moving eitire communities into the future. Continuing library programs and expanding library reach requires money. Retreating assures the demise of libraries. Innovative programming and marketing opens new worlds and assures success.Kenneth Kruckemeyer (Boston, 2025-07-26)
#244
The free evening concerts given by the Makanda Project have been an inspiration and a pleasure for me, my family and my friends. There are few venues in Boston where a multi-cultural and multiracial crowd gathers with such love and respect for the music, the musicians and each other. I go for the familiar faces and for friends old and new as much as for the music. The nighttime is truly the right time for such gatherings: it's the culmination of the day, not something wedged between other obligations.Jay Kent (Dedham, 2025-07-26)
#246
I am signing because John and the Makanda Project has a special place in my heart. I would go with my family at a young age and loved seeing live music and being able to paint on the nights of painting and jazz. Please keep the Makanda going!!Cesar Neves (Cambridge, 2025-07-26)
#247
These concerts are important and contribute greatly to the cultural life of Roxbury. It is an intergeneration space and experience that would greatly impact local residents and great Boston residents if discontinued.Vanessa Silva (Dorchester, 2025-07-26)

I love the Makanda concerts and have been attending them for years. The library is a valued and appropriate venue to present them, and, I love hosting the concerts in Roxbury. I feel great pride that Makanda has selected our community to perform their amazing, beautiful music! Do not take away this Joy we are so blessed to experience time after time... Thank you very much! The library has been important venue for culturally relevant arts and culture like the Makanda Project and we need to preserve that more now than ever.Leslie Reid (Boston, 2025-07-27)

Please listen to the people who live in the communities of Boston. When we who live here determine that evening hours at the RPL our best for the concert, that decision should not be overridden by a bureaucratic policy. The people of our city are what makes a Livable Boston our joy.Mary McCabe (Boston, 2025-07-27)

I have enjoyed these concerts immensely. They are a great service to the community. If the local branch is fine with having them on a Saturday night, after normal library hours, then I don't see why they shouldn't continue at that time.Bryan Tucker (Boston, 2025-07-27)

I am & have been a big supporter of the Makanda Project for many years now. I have followed them in various locations. The offer the community a genre of music that no one else is offering. And they offer us a wide variety of musical talent & guest musicians some of whom I would never had the opportunity to listen to. I truly enjoy when they're at the Roxbury library. It's home and has a nice an intimate setting. We get to see people who we value in the community. We also support the Friends of the Roxbury Library by buying the wonderful Home Made Bake Goods that they always have prepared for us. It would be a shame not to have them performing in the community. Please make a way to keep The Makanda Project at the Roxbury Library. Note: often I bring friends from all over Greater Boston the north & south shores and Western Mass. A big fan. ParmieParmie Polk (Brighton, 2025-07-27)

I'm signing because it's crucial to continue to support the Arts in Our Democracy, as well as, within Our communities. Jazz is an original Art format organically grown through the lens of the Diaspora, and as such there's no better platform than the Roxbury Public Library.Parris Battle (Boston, 2025-07-27)

I adore these performances and the venue is ideal, and very good for the community, uplifting, informative and it's a wonderful way to preserve Jazz. Former Mgr/family member of Wally's Cafe Inc.Michael Penn (Jamaica Plain, 2025-07-28)

I am signing this petition because the concerts provide an amazing cultural enrichment to the community on a Sat. evening. Their presentation of works by esteemed composers of color and others serve to uplift and broaden our appreciation of the jazz art form. Attending aSat. evening concert is ideal, as many of us are free from meetings and other demands. We
deeply appreciate the musical genius that the Makunda Project brings to the community for our evening enjoyment.

The Library is a community space that should be accessible to all- offering high quality cultural events to all. Why not to this group of talented musicians and audience?June Cooper (289 Wachusett Street, 2025-07-28)

Over the past 10 years I've been attending these concerts, they have been supremely educational also the concerts exposed young people to the legacy of jazz history. It is a bridge in the community, that brings together a diversity of those who live in Roxbury and outside. The music is truly an important aspect of bringing people together. I look forward to the continuation of Saturday evenings with Makanda. I support the mission of the band to continue the legacy of jazz.Hakim Raquib (Dorchester, 2025-07-28)

The Makanda Group is a Roxbury staple and we need them to remain at the Sarah Ann Shaw Library. Roxbury appreciates the music and mood they provide continuously to its residents. Please reconsider your decision.Willa Mae Burnett (Roxbury, 2025-07-28)
#277
I'm signing this because is important to keep the concerts of the Makanda Project at the Public Library in the Roxbury branch. The concerts at this space create an important and positive music experience for the community. It is also important to have this concerts during the night as it is more convenient for the artists and the public attending the concert.Gerardo Alvarado Rivas (Cambridge, 2025-07-28)

I've been going to their shows since the 1st concert in the ica building when ica was down near the bpl. Excellent music, world renown jazz performers sit in, a boston legendary composer and a worthy cause gor many many years. Hears the sounds and enjoyDaniel Sliwa (Dedham, 2025-07-28)

I'm signing because Boston needs more music, culture, and genuine concern for people and the environment. Children needs to see and experience the black heritage of their community, and Nubian Square needs to be a place of immense black culture and pride. I can't think of a better way to celebrate and shine a light on the Sarah Ann Shaw Library in Roxbury, MA.Sean Ebanks (Dorchester, 2025-07-29)

I'm signing because I value the Makanda Project and want to support their ability to continue to hold concerts in a public, community-based venue that they have performed in in good faith for many years.Kenny Likis (Cambridge, 2025-07-29)

There is absolutely no reason that this wonderful jazz program should not be able to operate within the library after hours. No one's using the space. No one is causing any damages. I feel that it should continue.Isaiah Simpson (Everett, 2025-07-29)
#292
It is insult to be shut out of our own library, especially given the long tradition for these concerts. Being asked to shift to the daytime feels infantilizing and frankly contrary to a lot what a great jazz concert is about.Britta Hiester (Roxbury, 2025-07-29)
#294
Please keep supporting these concerts at the library. After hours programming is a wonderful way to extend the mission of the library as a community space.Christine Napolitano (Boston, 2025-07-29)
#295
I want to see this jazz group continue playing for the community because their music does more than entertain — it brings people together, preserves cultural heritage, and inspires creativity across generations. Live jazz creates a unique atmosphere that uplifts the spirit, fosters connection, and adds vibrancy to our shared spaces. Keeping this group active helps ensure that this powerful art form remains a living, breathing part of our community, and I have truly been blessed by it.Natasha Houston (West Bridgewater, 2025-07-29)
#296
Right is right and I've been going to these concerts for many years. It's a great community event and it brings people from all walks of life into one setting.wayne lucas (newton, 2025-07-29)

I think it wrong that the community can not use a public building for community events. I do believe my property tax (properties in Boston) contributes to other events in the city so why not this one?Michelle Jones (Roxbury, 2025-07-29)
#298
We need events in Nubian Square and this event has been a staple in my community imperative that it stays. There are too few cultural events in Nubian Square as it is. I recommend that the library work with the city of Boston to provide the funds to keep it.Pamela Miles (Roxbury, 2025-07-29)
#299
We want to continue hearing the concerts in the warm atmosphere of the library on Saturday night when we can all be there.Christine Doherty (Watertown, 2025-07-29)

I'm signing this petition because I have attended The Makanda Project concerts @ the Roxbury Branch Library since 2008. The Saturday evening performances at this venue have been a wonderful community event. Changing the time to Saturday afternoon would most certainly decrease the number of attendees. The missed opportunity for so many people to experience such great music would be detrimental to all, especially the young people whose numbers have increased over the years. I urge reconsideration of the decision to change the time. Thank You, L BarraLorraine Barra (Medford, 2025-07-29)

My wife and I cannot get to the library on Saturday afternoons. But I sure would hate to miss these concerts. Not only is the music great, but the concert brings people together from all parts of Boston. Please find a way to continue Sat. night concerts.Don Carlson (Boston, 2025-07-29)

I am signing this petition because I feel very strongly that these Makanda Project concerts need to take place ON SATURDAY EVENINGS AT THE ROXBURY LIBRARY BRANCH. This venue and event have provided for years a unique occasion and resource for our community. It’s a congenial, uplifting and safe gathering place for a wide variety of people. Here, neighbors, friends, families, grand-parents, children and grandkids listen to great music, are educated, share information, make plans and connect with each other during moments of true companionship and valued community time in the midst of our often stressful and very full weeks. Always well attended – how often can we access such opportunities? Most of us work, at least from 9-5 during the week, and frequently much longer. For us “ordinary people,” this means we must “take care of self” (grocery shopping, laundry, daily life and family management, etc.) pretty much on Saturdays. Having this opportunity to reliably get together, decompress and have a social moment once our work is done, i.e. on SATURDAY EVENINGS is essential for our health and well-being.The BPL AND its Roxbury branch are supposed to be a community resource. For the local Library to basically only be available for community use during our working hours (except for a couple of hours on Monday night!) is truly sending a “you don’t really matter” and “we downtown people don’t have to take into account the realities of YOUR lives…”. What a shame to let such a valuable resource sink into such limited use.
Please think about the larger picture of our lives, the mission of a Public Library and re-consider.
Thank you.

The Makanda Project has brought so much joy and inspiration to our community over the years. People of all ages—from children to seniors—attend these concerts. Sadly, I’ve seen too many cultural “gems” like this disappear, and this is now one of the few remaining spaces offering free jazz concerts in our area. Please consider helping us to keep it alive.audrey kalajian (Boston, 2025-07-30)

Here, neighbors, friends, families, grandparents, children and grandkids listen to great music, are educated, share information, make plans and connect with each other during moments of true companionship and valued community time in the midst of our often stressful and very full weeks. Always well attended – how often can we access such opportunities? Most of us work, at least from 9-5 during the week, and frequently much longer. Having this opportunity to reliably get together, decompress and have a social moment once our work is done, i.e. on SATURDAY EVENINGS is an important cultural treasure, and the timing of this decision speaks volumes and shines a light upon what other treasures may become less available to whom and by whom in this city. The BPL AND its Roxbury branch are supposed to be community resources. Please think about the larger picture of all our lives, the mission of a local Public Library and reconsider. "... formed in 1805 by a group of Bostonians... They created the Boston Athenaeum to form an establishment “combining the advantages of a public library [and] containing the great works of learning [, the art,] and science in all languages.” Please do not use the standards of 1805 to decide whose access to social and artistic contributions will become less available.
Thank you.

I'm signing because the Makanda Project concerts at the Roxbury Branch have become a vital part of our community's cultural life. These evening performances offer an accessible, enriching space for residents to gather, celebrate local talent, and connect through music. Removing evening access limits the reach and impact of events that are clearly valued and well-attended. The library should remain a hub for the arts and community engagement, especially in neighborhoods like Roxbury where these resources are deeply meaningful.Kayla Rose (Allston, 2025-07-31)

The Makanda Project concerts are the only concerts I see in Roxbury. There are many other concerts that I see in many other parts of the city, but the Makanda project is the only group with such a presence and eminence that performs only in Roxbury and other underserved parts of the city on a regular basis. As such their presence is special and important and I do not want to see it diminished by moving a time to one that would deprive many people the opportunity so see these wonderful concerts.Simone DeVito (Jamaica Plain, 2025-08-02)

Evenings are the optimal time for concerts especially in communities where individuals often have work responsibilities during the day. This provides an opportunity for jazz education close to where renowned drummers Roy Haynes, Alan Dawson and Tony Williams grew up. The exhaustion from news cycles can be dissipated in the evening energy. We can be rejuvenated by music with prominent cultural roots as we prepare for upcoming challenges. Thank you for your consideration,Beatrice Greene (Boston, 2025-08-07)

I am responding to this “call to arms” because I am in favor of continuing the evening performances by the Makanda Project at the Roxbury Branch of the Boston Public Library.First, I am totally biased. I have been there during the evolution of my husband’s efforts for the Makanda Project, the Roxbury community, our youth, and music lovers throughout Greater Boston. I feel what I have to share matters. I have been there along with Lloyd King, Mimi Jones, Sarah Ann Shaw and many other loyal supporters who persevered and actualized a safe, nurturing and accessible space for all the residents to hear and enjoy authentic jazz. These performances at the Roxbury Library from 7 to 9:30 pm engendered family participation. The space has been nurturing and educational for babes in arms, the elderly, and all in between.
These performances at the Roxbury Library are and always were an outstanding Saturday evening treat. Folk throughout the Greater Boston area found that attending was refreshing – a find, a jewel, and it was free. These performances have included well known jazz artists, poets, and local talent, and showcased the growth of a solid core of great musicians – musicians we have come to know and love as our/the Makanda Project. This family of friends has engaged and amazed us since 2008. They are enthusiastically embraced by the community.
Moving the time of this evening performance would be devastating to the community and for the selfless musical talents. Few places exist for all to just be and enjoy great jazz. Changing the time will not accommodate the needs of the community. Please reconsider your decision. It is especially critical at this sad time in our country to provide a space in the community to be together and feel connected.

It is extremely important that Roxbury traditions continue, especially those that attract residents and visitor to Roxbury in community. The Jazz tradition should be encouraged for economic, cultural and community reasons.Kathryn Williams (ex-Roxbury resident who like to return to Roxbury., 2025-08-30)

I am a long time fan who deeply appreciate the gifted musicianship and compositional uniqueness of Makanda Project’s repertoire. MP is the ONLY Metro Boston based ensemble singularly committed to Boston Jazz great Ken McIntyre. These individual musicians, all of whom have made a professional commitment learning this music, growing together as ensemble. Please demonstrate the City of Boston’s commitment to this unique musical experience. Please allow Roxbury and their Boston neighbors to experience this musical gift. A gift will extend Roxbury community reputation as nurturing of an expansive creative space for Jazz! Forgive the length of this; recognize its heart felt intention.Paula Elliott (Jamaica Plain, 2025-08-31)

I support the Makenda Project's continued use of the Roxbury Branch Library and fully support having the band continue its tradition of providing our community with vivid sounds and a welcoming environment on the same venue and time as always--Saturday nights w/out having to change the venue (Roxbury Branch Library) or the time.JOSIE HATUEY (Roxbury, 2025-09-23)
