There are very few things that families can enjoy that are free in Whangarei completing the loop without having to pay parking is one of them and extremely popular. The playground is extremely popular as well we should be encouraging families young and old to exercise.

We shouldn't pay if it was meant for the enjoyed of family time. Not everyone can afford the parking but love to bring our children to use the park as funtime for them. Why change it now? If you change it people will stop coming and where do parents take their children then? I say no to paying for parking.

(Whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#5

I want it to say free. Would shop cbd if it was free

(Whangarei , 2017-07-20)

#8

The town basin playground is one of the few free places to take my kids. How disgusting that they're now going to start charging to go there

(Whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#9

We need to encourage people to come in to Whangarei not put them off.

(Whangarei , 2017-07-20)

#12

I always walk the loop twice sometimes.Theres no way i wanna pay to walk the loop. And often go down there on the weekends with kids/ hubby. To get them out for a free bit if exercise. Its a great walk around with the kids.Theres not enough to do in this town so it gets used lots by us.So its really annoying that this is it.We dont all have coins in our wallets everytime we go down there for the stupid machines that dont always work anyway. So i say let it be free!

(Whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#13

I'm signing because this is my daughters favourite place to be and it should be free to enjoy leisurely not rushed in a panic in case of parking tickets and extra expenses. Don't fix something that isn't broken.

(whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#14

The council have created a wonderful area for all to enjoy and now they are going to kill it

(Whangarei , 2017-07-20)

#18

I will actually stop going to the town basin. I do the loop 5 times a week in the summer if I have to pay for parking and ice cream is will just stop going

(Whangarei , 2017-07-20)

#20

I think it is important to keep this parking area free of charge for parents trying to carry out free activities - given that a lot of other choices cost horrendous amounts and holidays are hard to fill! Plus this might have a negative impact for businesses at the town basin; it might deter people stopping in at all and/or if anyone gets a parking ticket they might be left with a bad taste in their mouth! Local Whangarei businesses need all the support they can get.

(Quandaries, 2017-07-20)

#22

People will choose to shop where it's free like the Okara shops...don't hurt little business by taking the people away..

(Whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#25

Now with a big investment in the new hunderwasser project at the town basin you'd think the local council would want to encourage even more visitors to the town basin adding paid parking would kill these attractions for people as has shopping in the cbd and people shop at Okara because parking is free! I object also to the idea of fencing off the playground, whatever is wrong with parent supervision and perhaps put the cellphone away and be involved with your children. Having said all that we have not had an incident of a child falling in and drowning in the water next to the play ground or being run over in the car park so good on you parents to date...no event recorded (that I'm aware of).

(Whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#26

First 2 hours should be free, then charge after that if they must have parking charges at all. Otherwise leave as is!

(Whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#28

I'm signing because I don't think you should have to pay for parking where families take their children to the park.

(Whangarei , 2017-07-20)

#33

Taking your kids to the park should not have to cost we have enough struggle as it is with rissing rent,Food ,ect can our kids not have some fun without having to pay for that aswell.

(Whangarei , 2017-07-20)

#36

THE TOWN BASIN SHOULD BE FREE FOR ALL TO ENJOY.
IF SOME PEOPLE PARK THERE ALL DAY, THAT IS SAD BUT DON'T USE IT AS AN EXCUSE TO PENALIZE THE REST OF US.
HANDS OFF THE FREE PARKING!!

(Whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#39

I think it's terrible that WDC would make tourists & public pay for parking while spending money on tourism In our town

(Whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#41

I believe there should be free parking at the basin to encourage people yo utilise this lovely area and patronise the shops in the area. I believe charging for parking in this area is very short sighted on the part of council. Obviously they are looking for ways to make quick and easy money, rather than dealing with empty store fronts in the CBD.

(Whangarei, 2017-07-20)

#42

I do not wish to pay parking fees at a tourist attraction area, not only will it stop me going but many others of which will affect many busineses on the basin.

(Whangarei, 2017-07-21)

#45

I fail to see the need. Surely rates can pay the up keep of the parking facility? Keep it free, have a 2 hour time limit, have parking wardens monitor it to ensure its not abused and let families enjoy the park, loop and cafes. Come on whangarei council, its just common sense.

(Whangarei, 2017-07-21)

#46

the best way to stifle business is to make customers pay to be there

(whangarei, 2017-07-21)

#50

Councils make enough try promoting Whangarei for once

(Whangarei, 2017-07-22)

#52

It will discourage families coming into town with their children and making use of the wonderful facilities that has been provided for the community. Its just another revenue scheme for the Council. What about the people??

(Whangarei, 2017-07-22)

#53

I am signing this because I walk the loop and stop for coffee at the Town Basin spending at least $10.00 in one of the lovely cafes at the Basin and as the basin has been and continues to be paid for by rate payers ( I am one and have been for over 40 years). Maybe collect money from the FREE LOADING CAMPER VANS which are parked everywhere. They stay for free, including a blue bus that parks for free while he works in Whangarei. Maybe this would be a better way of collecting money.

(Whangarei, 2017-07-22)

#54

Whangarei should not become mini-Auckland!!!

(whangarei, 2017-07-23)

#55

Should be free

(Whangarei, 2017-07-23)

#56

Life is already expensive for parents. Town Basin is the only place I can take my children to enjoy time to play and ride bike and then eat a ice cream. Add $4 for parking to that. Stop the greed, NO to parking at Town Basin

(Whangarei, 2017-07-23)

#57

Whangarei CBD is dead, empty shops because of greedy landlords and most people shopping at Okara because of free parking.......now a place where families go to run, bike ride play on the child friendly equipment then grab a coffee or meal or ice cream ....locals will not go and it will be another dead shopping area for Whangarei...but hey the council will get the benefits from all the parking charged and fines.......well done councillors another brilliant idea to encourage the locals to shop local NOT

(Whangarei, 2017-07-24)

#59

The loop and town basin need to be accessible to everyone without additional cost and to keep that area of town viable for families and rate payers.

(Whangarei , 2017-07-24)

#60

There's already enough paid parking in this town. The town basin is somewhere people can take their family for free, walk the loop, playground, look at the boats etc. They should NOT have to pay just to park. There is no need for this to happen.

(Whangarei, 2017-07-24)

#62

Parking situation in all of Whangarei is ridiculous for workers, shoppers and visitors alike. The Town Basin is a family friendly and very social area for residents and also tourists - the dollars need to go to the on site businesses not a parking meter.

(Whangarei, 2017-07-26)

#63

we have a delightful area around whangarei but sadly shops closing in the city, small shops suffer ,and musical baskers, will be worse off, also parents ,grandparents, walkers ,familys ,very few carry cash,to feed the meters, childen and family will have to walk across a busy main road to get to the play areas when theres no free parking .paying for parking drives people away from main centres.its worth noteing only three councillors tried to stop this paid parking.

(whangarei 0110, 2017-07-27)

#66

I say NO to this greedy charge by the Whangarei District Council

(Whangarei, 2017-08-16)

#67

It's anti economic development for our city.

(Whangarei, 2017-08-20)

#69

Our council need to be forward thinking and build a 3 level parking building nearby and leave the parking free by the basin.

(Whangarei, 2017-08-24)

#76

Most parking in whangarei is paid and I utilise paid parking. If I’m wanting to walk the loop or meet friends to relax in the basin area I always appreciated this free parking, although hard to find a park I would prefer it remained free for stress free happy times

(Dargaville , 2017-11-10)

#77

I think we need this area for family's and its the only one like it for free and it needs to remain this way! Not be taxed like EVERYTHING ELSE.

(Whangarei, 2017-11-10)

#78

Come on Parking in this town is a joke already! Now seven days a week in one of the most popular places in whangarei!
Give us a break

(Whangarei , 2017-11-10)

#79

We will now no longer be able to afford to visit the playground and walk the loop with our kids. $2 an hour - even on a Sunday - is appalling and is an unnecessary barrier to accessing the playground and loop.

(Whangarei, 2017-11-10)

#83

I love spending time here with my family when I come back to Whangarei....I don't want our enjoyment to have a time limit!

(Gold Coast, 2017-11-10)

#87

This should remain a free, family friendly area. To have to pay to go to the market or go to the park is just so unreasonable, the free town basin has been one of the biggest attractions of Whangarei. If there is going to be paid parking, $2 an hour is just too high and 7 days a week?! That's just unreasonable and money grubbing.

(Whangarei, 2017-11-10)

#88

This would be a great shame for Whangarei.

(Whangarei, 2017-11-10)

#91

I will not visit the town basin if I have to pay.

(Whangarei, 2017-11-11)

#93

There are other options to ensuring that people do not “hog” the spaces eg limited time. I thought we were trying to encourage people to the area.

(Whangarei, 2017-11-11)

#96

Whangarei is a small town and not Auckland, $2ph thats a rip off, lets destroy our beautiful town by making it very hard to park anywhere

(whangarei, 2017-11-11)

#97

Will create inequities and a barrier to the less well jerked who may be just trying to have some healthy outdoor

(Whangarei, 2017-11-11)

#99

I disagree with people being discouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle due to a cost prohibition

(Bream Bay, 2017-11-11)

#103

I'm signing because this is a great place for tourists as well as locals can be and enjoy what Whangarei offers. There is already enough paid parking in Whangarei, let them keep their money and let them spend it at local businesses

(Whangarei, 2017-11-11)

#104

Come on Council- we want to
promote the area and free parking is a must.

(Whangarei, 2017-11-11)

#112

Because its unfair for the families who cant afford so now lose out

(Whangarei, 2017-11-11)

#119

For those who can't afford it.

(Whangarei, 2017-11-11)

#120

Ruining experiences of town for everyday folk On strict budgets.

(Whangarei , 2017-11-11)

#121

We need more free parking to bring our city back to life, not less!!!

(Whangarei , 2017-11-11)

#122

Make the first 2 hrs free to support equity. Workers can pay, walkers should not have to

(Whangarei, 2017-11-11)

#125

Silly move, will be the death of the Town Basin!

(Whangarei, 2017-11-12)

#129

I believe there should be one sacred place in our city that is available all the time to any of our citizens. By all means put time limits in place...but no one should be prevented from enjoying this community space for the sake of a few dollars...and there will be those that this creates a barrier to. Get real WDC...the city centre has a hard enough time attracting custom...do not kill the town basin for the sake of this revenue gathering! Keep community spaces accessible!!!!

(Whangarei, 2017-11-12)

#133

The development of the Hatea Loop has become such a popular attraction in Whangarei, and part of that attraction is having the freedom to run/walk/scooter the loop with the kids, stop and look for painted rocks or play on the playground and then grab a coffee afterwards. It would be a shame if the time pressure bought on by paid parking were to impact such activities.

(Whangarei , 2017-11-16)

#135

This is the wrong way to fix the problem

(Whangarei , 2017-11-23)
