Requesting MOE consider dual zoning for Selwyn College and Glendowie College in Remuera, St Johns Auckland

My chn go to St thomas but can’t attend the high school across the road for their primary school. We live 3kms from selwyn college and 8kms from Glendowie college but are only in zone for Glendowie college. It just doesn’t make sense.

It’s important to embrace the spirt of community, kids should have the option of attending their local school with established friendships. Also kids should have the option of actively transporting themselves to school by waking or biking

Im signing because this absolutely makes sense. Teens have hard enough time stafting new school they need their frienss and to go to one closer to home

Until last year I lived in Meadowbank and as a result of the introduction of zoning for Selwyn we were 2 houses out of the Selwyn zone. We applied out of zone and got a place however it was very distressing for my children to think that they wouldn’t be able to go to Selwyn with their friends. It is such a long drive to Glendowie College and it is hard to imagine they would have felt part of the community.

I have 3 children who will be year 9 in 4 years,

We are currently in a tiny bubble of streets zoned for Glendowie College. The surrounding catchment is zoned Selwyn College. My child will not be able to continue through high school with the same cohort she has attended primary and intermediate with because of an arbitrary zoning regulation that means she must attend a high school where her primary and intermediate schools are not the local ‘feeder’ schools.

This impacts my son directly.

I want my kids to walk to school not have to bus or be driven. I want them to learn with the kids they grew up with and I want to continue to build connections with my local community.

The current zoning does not make sense and is ripping individual children away from strong and supportive friendship groups and also removing the option for those kids to walk to and attend a college in their own backyard community.

I am a teacher at Meadowbank School which is a contributing school affected by this zoning rule. I am aware of the impact the current zoning has on Meadowbank students, their friendships and families.

I believe that kids in my area will be better off with the choices

Anna Kirk (Auckland , 2021-04-16)

It's ridiculous to expect children to walk over 12km to school. This historical anomaly needs to be rectified.

Our children’s school friends live in a glendowie zone but all their friends will attend selwyn college

To continue to support our community and our children’s transition to secondary school.

I want my daughter to have choices

It is so important to me that my daughter can continue her schooling with friends. She really struggles to make friends and the social and mental impact of going to Glendowie and losing this really concerns me.

Sarah Radley (St Johns Auckland , 2021-04-16)

This is a sensible compromise required as a result of housing development over many decades since the original zones were drawn.

The zoning in this area appears to be an anomaly. Historically children could attend their closest school because it was unzoned. Subsequently, there was no pressure on the zone so they could continue to attend that school. Now, the zone is virtually full and children need to travel past their closest school to a school a long way away to attend a school that they are zoned for due to a historical anomaly. I have no vested interest in this zoning. However, it has always struck me as unusual and now that the zone is under pressure, it seems manifestly unjust and out of line with ministry guidelines around access to schools.

Catherine Poppelwell (Auckland, 2021-04-16)

I’m signing this because the current zoning makes no sense and I have seen the stress and anxiety it causes the children and parents when they have no option but to seperate their children from their friends.

Rachel Sutherland (Auckland , 2021-04-16)

These kids should be able to go to their local school. Right now, they're being forced into going to a school that's further away with a community they're not part of. It needs to be fixed ASAP.

Choice and community is crucial for kids!

Many students who attend school together at Meadowbank and Remuera intermediate then lose their friends when they move on to glendowie and it seems a shame. Also, geographically it makes more sense to give people the option , at lest at the remuera end of the zone. Thank you.

Sarah Syme (Auckland, 2021-04-16)

It seems crazy to have a pocket of kids who went to school together now separated snd having to travel a long distance to their zoned high school.

Fiona Ivory (Auckland, 2021-04-16)

It makes sense for young people to be able to attend their closest high school. This is important for the community, the families and for public health reasons. The benefits of being able to walk or cycle to school are significant. The St John’s Park area looks like an anomaly on the zoning maps.

Jude MacCormick (Auckland, 2021-04-16)

This arbitrary exclusion of certain streets within a community is impacting on children who have to go to a school outside of the community they have grown up in and places pressure on them and their caregivers to transport them further to get to a school that they have no connection with. It makes sense to have a dual zone for these streets so that affected parties can choose what is best for them. It will not likely materially affect the role of either school to give this option to these families.

The local Kohimarama community deserves to be able to go to the local school

Stephanie Taylor (Auckland , 2021-04-17)

I'd like my children to have both options available to me.

It seems crazy that students that are together at primary school are then zoned for different high schools. We must keep our communities together - for the benefit of the students, families and the culture of our schools.

Anna Stanley (Auckland, 2021-04-17)

Enabling young people to maintain and strengthen friendships in a location that is part of their community is key in supporting strong educational outcomes

Claire Wilde (Tauranga, 2021-04-17)

#94

It is important that young people can remain with their communities and going to their local high school helps facilitate this

Eewei Lim (Auckland , 2021-04-17)

Zoning for these two schools seems arbitrary and not in the best interests of the students and where they have been previously receiving education.

We live in Stoneyroyd Gardens, zoned for Glendowie and have 2 boys aged 7 and 8. I hope it is dual zoned for their future.

Sally Gunn (Auckland, 2021-04-18)

I'm signing because, as an educator for over 30 years, I understand the importance of children maintaining healthy friendships, particularly as they become teenagers. Being a part of an established friendship community (including peers and their parents) will help to provide stability during what can be for some, challenging years.
I am also signing because it makes logical sense for families to have the option of choosing a school that is geographically close to them.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts.

I am signing this petition because I have been informed about the predicament of a friend's grandson who will be impacted as set out in this petition.
Is it not time to review the status of the children who have attended the local the Meadowbank Primary, St Thomas Primary and Remuera Intermediate Schools and allow them to attend Selwyn College rather than be forced to start over again with unknown children at Glendowie College,12-13 kms from their homes. The Petition sets out excellent reasons for you to please consider dual zoning
for the children and the community.Thank you for reading my email and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I have dear friends with sons who are negatively affected by the current zoning

Kathryn Lewis (Auckland, 2021-04-23)

I have children of my whanau who are negatively ffected by the current zoning. They face the prospect of having to go to Glendowie College, much further from their home than Selwyn College. In the process they will lose contact with their friends.

I live in Monteith Crescent and my son goes to meadowbank school. He will attend Remuera intermediate with his friends. I believe it would be too much of an upset to go to a college that is not local. No friends, no community connections.
