We do NOT want Nelson Council to proceed with the planned new library

I completely agree with the statements made in this petition.

Jean Edwards (NELSON, 2021-05-31)

#3

A new library for that price can only be justified if the basics have been taken care of, and when there is enough money to spare. Neither is the case. With sea levels rising, it is also in the wrong place.

Monika Clark-Grill (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#4

Council should not raise any more debt than is absolutely necessary.

Derek Forsyth (Nelson , 2021-05-31)

#6

We do not need a new library the one we have is perfectly adequate why spend $44 million on something we don't need!

Robert Renshaw (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#7

I’m totally against the plan to build a new library and the huge cost involved.

Helen Gowland (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#8

There are more pressing needs in nelson and the wider TDC community then a flashy library!

Karin Roehling (Upper Moutere, 2021-05-31)

#9

We do not need a new library as nothing wrong with what we have and the price we can not afford.

Nelson needs other more important work done in providing more homes, fixing footpaths, and doing more for climate change

Marie Friend (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#10

as a pensioner I have difficulty living on the pension. I will have even less to live with if these draconian increases are implemented. NCC grow a brain and show sympathy to those not on your large salaries.

Wayne McCarthy (nelson, 2021-05-31)

#12

its a complete waste of money

Denise Bailey (nelson, 2021-05-31)

#15

I feel the library could be upgraded for probably 10% of the 44 million quoted for a new one.

Margaret Cotton (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#16

I am against the new library $44 million plus as previously written to council

Paula Panckhurst (Stoke, 2021-05-31)

#18

I'm tired of council blurting the rates up and doing Unnecessary spending

Lisa Pratter (Stoke, 2021-05-31)

#20

This is not the right time for such spending. Too many ratepayers are suffering financially and Council’s ego is inappropriate

Barbara Shirley (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#21

Cost is way too much

Brent Nicholls (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#22

I don't see the need to spend that sort of money on something we have.
What about spending money on a board walk along Rocks Road for the benefit of Nelson residents and tourists

Joseph Mason (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#23

I am signing this because as a teacher aide, with 3 children and a husband who is studying, we simply cannot a afford it. There are children at our schools who live in dreadful conditions and are constantly moving because their parents (who work hard in jobs paid with a minimum wage) cannot afford rent/no hope of ever affording their own house. It is disgusting spending this much money when we have a VERY usable library already! We say NO, NO, NO!

Catherine Donoghue (Nelson , 2021-05-31)

#25

The new library has not been properly costed, and is unnecessary. The foundations could be half the cost.

Dan McGuire (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#26

It is an unbelievable waste of Ratepayers money even the interest payment on the debt will add to rates each year and where is the parking that the current library enjoys

Gaire Thompson (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#29

I am opposed to the new library and the consequent rise in rates. Our current library is adequate in this digital age. There are many community and environmental issues to be considered before such a project.

Juliet Lewis (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#30

this is a nice to have item rather than a need to have item which is way over priced and at risk of flooding , And leaving debt for future generations

Kevin Gardener (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#32

I object to NCC thinking we need a new library at such a prohibitive cost. As a long time Nelson Ratepayer, as well as Library member & user, there is no reason the library cannot be renovated, and/ or updated but I see no need, or sense, in a re-build. There are so many other things Nelson needs before incurring unecessary debt of this scale.

Lynne Keys (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#35

The rates have a portion that is tied to the capital value which is increasing at a rate far higher than inflation. I presume the council staff wish to keep their wage increases similar.
It would be preferable for the council at this time to show restraint and respect its ratepayers.
Stop wasting money on the luxuries.

Tony Currie (Richmond, 2021-05-31)

#37

I am a live alone pensioner existing on the pension. I just cannot afford higher rates

Gay Sturgess (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#43

I’m sick and tired of Council proceeding with projects like a new library and other wasteful spending (eg fencing Marsden Cemetery) on the assumption that ratepayers will dutifully pay the rate rises that will be necessary to fund them. NCC best realise the growing groundswell of resentment around this issue. The ratepayers have the ability to cripple Council soending by refusing on mass to pay any increases. Look no further than the Auckland Harbour bridge cycling lane issue to see the power of a frustrated large group of people sharing a common concern

Des Ross (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#44

Waste of ratepayers money and the council can never produce anything to budget. Council needs to focus on necessities not luxuries

John Walker (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#45

Nelson does not need a new library. The current one is big enough and never reaches its capacity. Don't want Nelsonians to pay for something the majority will never use. Better use the money to properly fix/reseal roads rather than spraying chipseal that creates a lot of mess, uneven surface and damages our cars!

Vitaliy Veremyuk (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#46

No need to spend all that money on library. Spend it on roads and housing. THINK ABOUT RATE PAYERS.

Susan SIMPSON (Nelson , 2021-05-31)

#47

Ratepayers money poorly spent by the council in these desperate times,

Allen Singleton (Nelson, 2021-05-31)

#49

A 44 million dollar library is not really needed at this stage. There are more important matters like maybe a Revamp on the Nelson Hospital, Better Pay for Nurses, Equipment etc. Better care for the Elderly.

Maria Cawdron (Woodstock Place Stoke, 2021-06-01)

#50

Because there are far greater needs in our community than a library that will not survive climate change sea rise.

Zoe MacAlpine (Nelson, 2021-06-01)

#51

I'm signing because I believe we need this money to be spent in other, more critical areas. I also believe in this time of Covid, we need to be tightening our belts, not spending huge amounts. Plus the budget is likely to spiral from the original quote, and last time Council organised a building (Stoke Centre) it was a fiasco.

Shelley Carppe (Nelson, 2021-06-01)

#52

I am signing because if rates go up this I will not be able to afford to pay them. I am only on a pension and cannot see pension rising to be able to cope with this increase
I do not want that horrific cost of a new library

Brian Skellon (Nelson, 2021-06-01)

#53

We do not need a new library. Twenty years ago it was state of the art, we do not need rate increases when people are finding it hard to make ends meet. Yes I like libraries, do I use them ? No not now. I am a teacher and encourage students to use one too but not at that price. Why build next to river when we have been told in the Wood that are houses are at risk from rising sea levels.

Kyra Wilkie (Nelson , 2021-06-01)

#55

This is an insane proposal! Coming from Auckland, I was very impressed with the Nelson library. There are far more important things, than spending that much money on replacing something that doesn't need replacing.
This is an ego project for a mayor who has lost touch with the people of Nelson. The people of Nelson haven't asked for a new library, they are against it. They have however asked for the Maitai Valley to remain rural! Who are the mayor and councilors working for, if not the people of Nelson?

David Matulovich (Nelson, 2021-06-01)

#56

I think think there are far more important infrastructure items to be rectified before a very expensive library is built. It comes not seem to me very important, oh I am at the library every week here in Stoke

Mary Aitken (Nelson, 2021-06-01)

#58

I personally use the Stoke library to renew my library books, and occasionally if i am going to town, o will change my books there. i find the existing facilities more than adequate for my needs, and feel that the money that has been approved for a new library could be better used elsewhere.

William King (Stoke, Nelson 7011, 2021-06-01)

#61

I am extremely upset at both the exorbitant rate rise planned overnext 10 years by City Council and strongly oppose the planned library. Totally appalled.

Norma Laing (Nelson, 2021-06-01)

#70

This is an unnecessary luxury. The existing library is perfectly adequate. If they refuse to listen to ratepayers and go ahead, I have no faith in NCC to deliver this project on time, on budget or within the building regulations and specifications. Remember Greenmeadows?

Judy Pittman (Nelson, 2021-06-02)

#72

I think it is an outrageous amount to spend on a white elephant

Diane Adams (Nelson, 2021-06-03)

#76

I believe the suggested funding should be directed towards more pressing infrastructure needs

Helen Talbot (Nelson East, 2021-06-04)

#77

We need to be listened to for a change. Nothing wrong with current Library.

Lindy Aker (Nelson, 2021-06-04)

#80

I feel there are other areas in more dire need of assistance. Like a woman's refuge/ haven for the homeless/addicts needing safe and secure protection from the elements and those that harm these women. A support for those who have had a wrong turn and want to make it right but need help.

Helena Ventura (Nelson, 2021-06-04)

#81

Totally fed up with the behaviour and lack of accountability of the current council. Surprised at the behaviour of some that I voted for and had trusted to act in the best interests of local ratepayers.

Ann Cooper (Nelson, 2021-06-04)

#82

It is just a dumb idea that we don’t need and can’t afford ... in an area that could be flooded ... so you plan to put it 4 m in the air ... stupid !

Tim Bayley (Nelson , 2021-06-04)

#85

As a very regular user of the library, there is no need for a new one. It seems ridiculously expensive and surely there are much better ways to spend this enormous sum of money. Our rates are already too high.

Andrea Eagles (Nelson, 2021-06-06)

#90

I am for a MODERATE upgrade. I am sure, most Nelsonians at the bottom of the income/assets range agree. Even some well-off may agree. There are more important/essential project than a $45 million (most likely much more ) library.

Eckart Runge (Nelson, 2021-06-08)

#92

While I accept taxes are necessary and a social good if used well I don't understand why rates are increasing so much more than either inflation or wages.

Anthony Gibbons (Nelson, 2021-06-08)

#95

Because the present library is fine as it is anddoesn't need upgrading for the time being.
Efforts should instead be directed against wrecking the Maitai valley with the proposed multi house subdivision.

SIMON BESLEY (NELSON, 2021-06-08)

#99

I totally agree that a new library is NOT necessary and is a waste of money.

Jane Bellerby (Takaka, 2021-06-17)

#100

We do not need a new library - we have more pressing infrastructure needs....... It is arrogant of the Nelson City Council to spend OUR money in this way!!!

Justine McDonald (Nelson, 2021-06-17)

#101

Makes total sense.
Be thrifty spend on essential issues

Cohen James (Nelson, 2021-06-29)

#103

This project is a total waste of ratepayer money given the age and condition of the current library. It is not needed.

Cheril Barber (Stoke, 2021-07-11)

#104

The waste of rate payers money must be stopped.

Katie Allan (Dipton, 2021-07-20)

#107

I don't think Nelson City Council should build a new library as its not needed. It shouldn't be built where the existing one is. It's also on Maori land so to built on Maori land will incur ongoing issues.

Motueka has a new library was built for 5000 so why can't a new one be built in Nelson for the same price?

Deborah Russ (BRIGHTWATER, 2022-04-24)

#108

There is nothing wrong with the existing library. Concentrate on reducing ratepayers costs, not increasing them !

Colin Kidd (Nelson, 2022-05-21)
