SAVE TAURANGA BAY & NINE MILE FROM BECOMING A 24/7 INDUSTRIAL TRUCKING ROUTE

Comments

Nine Mile beach is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever had the pleasure of visiting, and this mining will absolutely ruin the serenity and peace of the area, not to mention really affect the wildlife that is abundant and has only grown to this level because of minimal human interference. Cape Foulwind is taking off as a tourist hotspot (because of the abundance of nature and tranquility), and this mining operation would interrupt this if not completely plateau it, impacting all its residents and any economic growth that was possible for the area. This is another example of companies abusing natural resources for economic gain, not giving any thought to the people and wildlife that call it home, and this is a worldwide trend that needs to be stopped. It makes me sad to think that Nine Mile will be ruined by the sounds of drilling and heavy machinery. Please find somewhere else.

This is not environmentally friendly. This is profit focused without any consideration for the damage it is doing to this fragile ecosystem.

Krissi Sullivan (Arthur’s Pass, 2021-08-07)

We the residents of Okari Rd deserve the right to enjoy the this area without it being turned into an industrial site.

Angela Smith (westport, 2021-08-07)

#8

In no way should this beautiful bountiful and exquisite place on earth be violated and mismanaged. Those who have the regressive idea that this land should be turned into an 'industrial area' are clueless. Who are their employers?

This proposal will destroy the character and ecology of a unique coastal area.

David Warner (Cirencester , 2021-08-07)

I have a home on the boundary of the proposed mine site. I have serious noise, pollution and environmental issues.

Tim Lang (Christchurch , 2021-08-07)

#12

Living on Okari Road we wish to maintain this unique coastal environment. We are opposed to the totally inappropriate location of the proposed mine and trucking route and the detrimental effects it will have on residents, visitors, animals and the environment.

What a beautiful, wild, untamed area of NZ.

I love the pristine area and would hate to see it disturbed.

Ben Douglas-Clifford (Christchurch, 2021-08-08)

This would be a nightmare for West coast tourism and an ecological disaster.

Julie Kennedy (Rangiora, 2021-08-08)

10 years of near constant mining for an exported product doesn't seem worth the cost on the environment, people, and wildlife.

Oscar Mein (Christchurch, 2021-08-08)

This is bloody ludicrous 🤬

Deb Williams (Rangiora, 2021-08-08)

I oppose the proposal to mine anywhere along our West Coast highway including the BJV mine in Barrytown.

I dont believe private enterprise have any right to completely ruin this beautiful natural place. It must be stopped!

Christine de Felice (Christchurch, 2021-08-08)

This area has significant wildlife habitats, walking tracks, coastal beauty and humans cohabiting the area happily. This Taonga should not be destroyed. Once taken it will be damaged beyond repair. Native flora & fauna come before single purpose human greed!

jo Scott (Auckland, 2021-08-08)

This part of NZ is pristine coastline that should be left undisturbed and treasured for its natural beauty

I am a property owner on Okari Rd and am adversely affected by this proposal.

Matt Alexander (Westport, 2021-08-08)

I am local to the are. I regularly ride my horse on nine mile beach and have friends who live on Okari road and at Tauranga Bay. This operation would severely impact the peace, beauty and uniqueness of the area.

Annie Sepie (Westport, 2021-08-08)

#52

I am definitely not against mining on the West Coast and the growth of the Buller District but are opposed to the inappropriate location of the proposed sand mine bordering a residential subdivision and the 24/7 trucking route through our untouched natural beaches and bays.
Also producing Heavy Mineral Concentrate (HMC) is new mining technology in NZ and therefore believe there should be strict regulatory guidelines to ensure there are no negative side effects to residents safety and wellbeing.

Untamed wilderness or more mobile phones?

Paul Allott (Nelson, 2021-08-08)

I’m heavily involved in surfing and the surfing beaches around the area would become a very dangerous area for all the kids and adults that surf and are involved in the recreation around cape fowlwind

This is a beautiful, largely untouched and exquisite part of the country that will be absolutely decimated if this proposal goes ahead.

Katie Anderson (Gisborne, 2021-08-08)

#78

Opposed to the mine due to:
- noise pollution from the site and heavy trucks using Okari Rd and Tauranga Bay Rd
- light pollution from the site and headlight sweep affecting residences
- detrimental effect on little blue penguins
- health and safety risks of heavy vehicles on narrow roads clashing with other road users including pedestrians, cyclists, surfers and tourists unfamiliar with the area
- risk of dust containing radioactive materials contaminating rainwater drinking supplies of local residences and baches

Andrew Blake (Blenheim , 2021-08-08)

Not opposed to mining or economic development but NOT HERE. This is a stunning, tranquil, wild spot.

Jo Parsons (Hokitika, 2021-08-08)

#81

I visit and enjoy the area often and appreciate the natural environment as it is and for what it has to offer, without excessive traffic ruining the area or sand being quarried and negatively impacting the unique environment. As if the area hasn’t been impacted enough recently with the impacts of global warming from disturbances to and destruction of our natural environment. Shame on you Westland Mineral Sands. The effect on the environment and to property owners will be substantial and at the very least, more than minimal so should therefore be notified.

Cathi Kernot (Christchurch , 2021-08-08)

#82

I'm signing this petition because
its unacceptable to think you could drive truck and trailer units 24/7 on such a narrow road that the public use@as well as a cycle way.

Trish Roberts (Buller, 2021-08-08)

#87

This wouldn't be a good thing as I live on the corner of Wilson's lead rd,for 30 years peace and quiet i can not see it staying that way with truck's running 24/7 so no thanks.

It’s outrageous to not notify the public of such a disturbance of a 24/7 10yr operation an the expectation that one an all would accept this

Object to the Potential disturbance to wildlife and the environment

Kylie Murphy (Sydney, 2021-08-09)

The area is too beautiful to become a highway for trucks.
Do big business somewhere else and leave it alone.

Paul Kennedy (Christchurch , 2021-08-09)

Because I live on the corner of Wilson lead road and I will be worried about taking my dog for a walk with all the big trucks going by ,so no

Sharon Patterson (Westport , 2021-08-09)

I think you should leave NZ resources alone.

Roger Wells (Westport , 2021-08-09)

Because we need to protect the untouched beauty of Tauranga Bay and the beautiful home for the seals.

Erica Lobb (Westport, 2021-08-09)

#113

I use the Tauranga Bay road/Okari road to access recreational areas, eg seal colony walks/Okari lagoon. Absurd that dual use of these roads with a mining operation should even be considered.

Bruce Stuart-Menteath (Punakaiki, 2021-08-09)

#120

I believe the WMS proposal would have a negative effect on the local environment and wildlife, the transport link, the proposed cycle and walking heritage trail, local residents and the local economy.

Marie Elder (RD 1 Runanga, 2021-08-09)

#121

This proposal doesn't consider the negative health impacts to nearby residents. The associated noise from the mining activity exceeds the noise limits spelled out in the Buller District Council plan which will negatively effect the health and well-being of residents living adjacent to the mine. There also hasn't been sufficient research regarding the radioactivity of the waste tailings. This could effect not only residents of the area, but also could be blown onto nearby farms, which could effect the milk supply.

Not only will the residents of Okari road be negatively effected, but also tourism may decrease as a direct result of the industrialisation of an otherwise pristine environment. It also doesn't consider the safety risks associated with 24/7 trucking along a narrow road that experiences heavy recreational use.

Sierra Jones (Westport, 2021-08-10)

I believe we need to preserve this wild untamed area & keep the tourists, wild life & residents safe!

This is a beautiful rural area, should never be allowed to have that many trucks drive a narrow road. 24 hrs a day really!!!!

Kerrie Burrow (Westport, 2021-08-10)

We have a property in Cape Foulwind and believe the natural environment needs to be protected. And that the quiet mostly untouched landscape is Buller's greatest asset.

I don't mind the mine if they find an alternative trucking route. Eg through the farm.

Ray Lunn (Westport , 2021-08-11)

I live in Tauranga Bay and would hate too see this beautiful pristine bay turn into a roudy trucking route.
It's just doesn't make since!

Hannah Green (Westport, Tauranga Bay, 2021-08-11)

#148

I am an owner of land opposite Tauranga Bay Beach and one of the people who developed it some 8 years ago. The process to receive Development Approval from the Buller Council was very complicated with the focus on the environment, access, plantings, impact on the local area including the beach, residents, tourists and visitors, height, noise, local animals including penguins, visable impact and safety regarding accesses. This pristine area of the Buller District should not be turned into a truck highway, transporting our beautiful sands to China or anywhere, whether 1 or 24hrs a day..Also there is no way that the road could stand up to this proposal and would be a major safety and traffic hazard to all the other residents, users, beach goers including children and visitors who go to the beaches and seal colony and lighthouse walks or travel along the Okari and Tauranga Bay Roads. It would have an irreversible impart on tourism in this beautiful area of NZ. OPPOSE IT!! The Councillors are only there because you put them there and they work and are paid by all ratepayers .... they must be put on notice for this absurb proposal. .

This is an insane idea. The impact upon the environment, wild life and community will be severe.
Tauranga bay is a jewel and should be protected.
We have a global climate crisis and this will add to the destruction of the planet.

Laura Garber (Barrytown, 2021-08-13)

This is one of the prime recreational areas for our region. It is rediculous and unsafe to send this many trucks through this area 24/7 on narrow roads.
