Latin and Greek live in a cold climate at our NORDIC universiteties and gymnasia. We have to show that we as classical scholars can contribute essential things to contemporary cultural discussion.

Opiskelin latinan kieltä lukiossa ja myöhemmin Oulun yliopistossa 1960 -luvun lopulla. Opettajani oli Unto Paananen, joka oli todella inspiroiva opettaja. Latinan kielen myötä innostuin myös paitsi antiikin historiasta myös nykyajan Välimeren maiden kulttuurista ja nykykielistä. On todella surkeaa, jos latina pannaan giljotiinille.

Olen entinen Jyväskylän yliopiston latinan ja ranskan opiskelija. Kiitos latinan, ranskaa ja muita kieliä oppii helpommin. Kun tietää sanan alkuperän, muistaa sen paremmin.

Paljon hauskoja ikimuistettavia muistoja latinan tunneilta koulusta, yliopistoltakin ne ovat mukavia.

Latina auttaa keskittymään, koska se on niin koukeroista ja tempaa mukaansa.

What we as individuals best can do to help University of Jyväskylä not to demolish its Latin studies is to tell about this  petition to as many appropriate people as we can do, prererably to those who realize and acknowledge the importance of our common roots in antiquity and transmitted through Latin and Greek. Please, send the link and title of this petition to your colleagues and friends both all over the civilized world and in Finland.

In the positive case University of Jyväskylä will, in front of massive public pressure from all over the world and Finland, rethink decision once made and not close down Latin studies. This helps, for its part, Finland to continue as part of civilization.

Latin is losing visibility in the modern world, but it is the foundation of civilization today as we know it. It might not have the immediately tangible rewards of STEM fields, but I believe it's incredible worthwhile. Please consider continuing the Latin curriculum.
