Rename Christchurch’s New Stadium After a Founding Figure of the City

J John Hewson · NZ

Petition to Remane Christchurch,s New Stadium in Honour of a Founding Member of Our City

Statement of Purpose

We, the undersigned, believe Christchurch's new stadium should carry a name that reflects the true heritage of our city. Christchurch was built through the vision, planning, and hard work of its early founder- the people who surveyed the land, oversaw the settlement and shaped the city into the place we know today. Their contribution deserves recognition in a meaningful and lasting way.

Why This Matters

A stadium is more than a building. It becomes a landmark, a gathering place, and a symbol of local identity. Naming it after a founding figure of Christchurch would:

Honour the individuals who planned and oversaw the establishment of our city

Strengthen our connection to Christchurch's History and Heritage

Provide future generations with a reminder of where our city came from

Ensure the stadium's reflects the community, not temporary trends

Christchurch has a rich story, and the people who built this city laid the foundations for everything we enjoy today. Their legacy should be recognised in a way that stands the test of time.

Our Request

We respectfully call on the Christchurch City Council and relevant decision-makers to:

Consider renaming the new stadium aftera founding member of Christchurch;

Select a figure whose contribution to planning, surveying, or settlement of the city is historically significant;

Engage with the local historians and the community to identify the most appropriate name.

Conclusion

This petition is not about politics or divion. It is about honouring Christchurch's origins and ensuring our new studium carries a name that reflects pride, history, and the people who shaped our city.

We ask for your support in recognising the foundations on which Christchurch was built.
