Give Students Darker School Uniform Options

M Melina Panayi · CY

We are calling on the school administration to introduce darker-coloured trousers and skirts as an alternative to the current beige uniform.

At present, students who menstruate can face unnecessary stress wearing light-coloured beige clothing during the school day. The fear that a period stain may show through can lead to embarrassment, anxiety, and constant checking of clothing, which takes attention away from lessons and normal school life.

School should be a place where students can focus on learning, not worry about whether their uniform will expose a natural bodily process. When a student is distracted by discomfort or self-consciousness, that affects confidence, participation, and overall wellbeing.

Offering darker-coloured trousers and skirts would be a simple, practical change that gives students a real choice. It would not remove the existing uniform, but it would add an option that better supports students’ mental health, dignity, and comfort.

We ask the school administration to approve darker-coloured trousers and skirts as an official uniform alternative for students, and to make that decision available for the next school year, or as soon as uniform rules can be updated. This is a small policy change with a meaningful impact on daily life, and it would help ensure that no student has to spend the school day worrying about avoidable embarrassment.
