Request for the reduction of student fees during the summer semester of 2020
*ENGLISH VERSION*
Due to the current circumstances of COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a massive economic turmoil and crisis, as well as the changed form of education at the University of Wroclaw, we would like to implore the possibility of reduction of our student fees.
The argumentation for our request is based on the loss of financial stability as well as employment opportunities for a substantial number of students.
Many of us have been forced to relocate from Wroclaw, due to financial constraints as well as necessity of vacating the dormitories. This results in even greater decrease of earning a wage that would allow us to continue our education, whilst supporting ourselves due to the severity of crisis’ impact on economy of smaller cities, as well as an exigency of the stay-at-home order due to the proximity of elderly family members in our home environments.
Considering the above, the monthly student fee of 1045 zł (one thousand forty five zloty), constituting 54,4% of a mean minimal wage (netto) is a financial burden which many of us, under current economical circumstances, is simply unable to bear. This viewpoint is supported by the official statement of the Ministry of Education, which on March 18th 2020 has issued a recommendation, imploring the Universities to freeze their student fees.
Additionally, due to the reduced number of classes, shorter semester and technical difficulties for the existing classes, such as, the inability of the lecturers to connect to the designated applications, shorter class time and difficulties with accommodating the number of students present for them, the amount of 1045 zł seems to be too substantial, especially while compared to the quality of education offered by the University under normal circumstances.
Having said that, all and any of us would be grateful for the chance to finish this semester, however in the present circumstances the financial burden of the student fees will render this notion impossible for many of us.
