the paper straw crises

Paper straws were introduced to reduce plastic waste, but they aren’t solving the environmental crisis as promised. Studies show that paper straws often end up in landfills because they can’t be recycled when contaminated with food or drink. According to a 2023 report, only about 9% of paper straws are properly composted, while the rest contribute to waste. Worse, the production of paper straws uses more energy and water than plastic, increasing carbon emissions.

Millions of customers are frustrated by paper straws that quickly become soggy and unusable. This affects everyone, especially people with disabilities who need reliable straws for accessibility. Fast food restaurants hand out millions of straws every day, multiplying the problem.

It’s clear that paper straws are not the answer—they fail both customers and the environment. We need fast food chains to switch to truly sustainable alternatives, like biodegradable or reusable straws, that work for everyone and actually reduce environmental harm.Screenshot_2026-04-28_143444.png
