Allow Responsible Phone Access for Grade 12 Learners Of Phoenix College During the School Day

S Siphumle Bandezi and Ntokozo Majola · ZA

We respectfully ask the Principle,Mr Mlalazi to allow Grade 12 learners to keep their phones with them during school hours, provided that they remain on silent and are only used with the teacher’s permission during lessons or when necessary outside class.

As matric learners, we are expected to be responsible and independent. Our phones are not only for communication; they are also valuable learning tools. Important announcements and study resources are often shared through grade WhatsApp groups. Without access to our phones, we only receive this information once we get home after extra lessons, which is later than many other students. This can delay our preparation and cause us to miss important updates.

For many learners like myself, phones are especially essential after school. Those who attend extra lessons rely on them to contact parents or transport regarding collection times and changes in arrangements. Having immediate access to a phone contributes to learners’ safety and peace of mind. This is a major concern for students who use public transport or services like Bolt or Uber. Issues such as changing drivers, incorrect driver details, or delays in communication can create serious inconvenience, not only for students but also for parents and teachers who are trying to coordinate safe transport.

We therefore ask the Principal to introduce a policy allowing strictly Grade 12 learners to keep their phones during the school day, with the understanding that they remain unused during lessons unless a teacher gives permission.

If you believe responsible phone access would improve learning, communication, and safety for matric learners.
