Psychedelic mushroom gummies and chocolates should not be legally sold in smoke shops where they are easily accessible without proper medical oversight, regulation, or consumer education. These substances can cause severe psychological reactions, including paranoia, psychosis, hallucinations, and dangerous behavior — especially in individuals who may not be aware of underlying mental health vulnerabilities. Unlike regulated medical cannabis programs that require screening and oversight, these psychedelic products are being marketed in candy form, which lowers the perceived risk and increases impulsive use. We have already seen real-life consequences of how quickly a person’s mental state can deteriorate after consuming these products. No family should have to experience trauma because of a substance that was casually sold over the counter with little warning. If marijuana requires regulation and medical cards in many states, then psychoactive mushroom products — which can produce far more intense mental effects — should be treated with equal or greater caution. Public safety, mental health protection, and responsible regulation must come first.
