"Cap Rates for South Wairarapa: Cap 2025/26 Rate Increase at 3%"
Petition Purpose: We, the concerned ratepayers of South Wairarapa, petition the South Wairarapa District Council (SWDC). We are deeply concerned about the excessive Council rates increases that are putting financial pressure on local households and businesses that have exceeded national levels, with some rate payers facing 100% increases.
As the Council plans for the future, we urge them to consider the following demands:
Specific Goals: Cap the 2025/26 rate increase at 3%, ensuring affordable and sustainable rates.
Desired Outcome:
1. - Operational Efficiency: Conduct a thorough review of Council operations to maintain total operating expenditure in FY 2026 at or close to the previous year's levels. Implement efficient budgeting and cost-saving measures
2. Priority Projects: Prioritise essential capital projects, including: - Improved wastewater treatment - Enhanced water supply quality - Road maintenance within an affordable and clearly-stated capital expenditure program for FY 2026-2028
3. Financial Security: Provide transparent and accountable financial management. Ensure the Mayor, Councilors and Local Governance Team to commit to supporting the financial security of local households and businesses, and fostering growth in the local economy.
By addressing these concerns, we aim to create a more sustainable and equitable financial future for South Wairarapa.
Sign this petition to urge SWDC to:
- Cap the 2025/26 rate increase at 3%.
- Adopt responsible financial management practices.
- Protect our community's financial and economic stability.
Signatories: This petition is open to all concerned ratepayers, residents, and businesses within the South Wairarapa District.
