Free State Interpreters’ Petition to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development
We, the undersigned interpreters working under the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development in the Free State Province, hereby express our firm opposition to the proposed robing of interpreters.
While we recognise the importance of professionalism, we believe that robing is a symbolic measure that does not address the real challenges faced by interpreters. It does not improve our remuneration, working conditions, or professional growth.
We therefore call on the Department to prioritise:
• Improved and fair remuneration
• Skills development and empowerment, including computer and digital literacy
• Meaningful consultation with interpreters before implementing policies that affect them
True professionalism is achieved through empowerment and fair compensation, not uniforms or robes.
