Join Us in Delaying Smart Phones for our Kids

Dear Parents,

The purpose of this petition to build a community of parents committed to delaying smartphones, internet access, and social media for our children as long as possible.

As a parent of girls in elementary and middle school, I’ve become increasingly concerned about the effects early exposure to smartphones and online platforms can have on children’s mental and emotional development. These concerns are powerfully reinforced in The Anxious Generation by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, who outlines how early access to smartphones and social media is contributing to rising rates of anxiety, depression, and online bullying—especially since 2009, when smartphone use became widespread.

Dr. Haidt highlights how strong peer pressure is during elementary and middle school years. As more kids get phones, the pressure on parents to give in grows. That’s why he encourages forming coalitions of like-minded parents—just like this one—so we can stand firm together.

This is not about being anti-technology—it's about choosing age-appropriate tech use. There are great alternatives for staying in touch with your child, such as: Basic cell phones without internet access and Smartwatches with limited calling and texting features.

We also find encouragement in knowing that many schools, districts, and even entire states (like South Carolina) are moving to ban or restrict smartphone use during school hours. Here in North Carolina, multiple bills are currently making their way through the legislature that aim to do address this issue.

If you believe kids should grow up without the pressure and distractions of smartphones and social media, please sign this petition and share it with other parents. There is strength in numbers! Let’s give our kids more time to be kids.
