Mandate More Fenced Playgrounds in St. John's Metro

The Issue

As a parent of an autistic child who likes to wonder, ensuring his safety is our utmost priority, yet finding safe and inclusive recreational spaces in St. John's, NL, is a significant challenge. Most public playgrounds lack proper fencing, making it impossible for children like Liam to enjoy these essential spaces without constant fear of them running into danger.

This situation extends to summer camp programs, which similarly lack secure environments, excluding children who require a safer setup. Many families in our community face this dilemma.

Children with autism or those who are prone to wandering often cannot enjoy the simple pleasure of playing in a public playground without risking their safety. Public playgrounds should be a place where every child, regardless of their individual needs, can play freely and safely. Fenced playgrounds offer peace of mind to parents and guardians, allowing children the freedom to explore and enjoy without undue worry.

St. John's needs more fenced public playground options. This is an achievable goal that will benefit countless families and their children.

Join our family in advocating for safer, more inclusive playground environments in our community. Sign this petition to urge local authorities to mandate the installation of fences in at least some public playgrounds and improve the quality of life for children and families. Together, we can make a difference and create a safer and more inclusive environment for every child.att.mSLd28pIe5-GIWfj-v0I37jC-Csit6sUcrTP065PH4A_.jpg
