Petition for Speed Humps - Mapmaker Lane

J Jim Hughes · US

In the last year, we have witnessed not one, not two, but at least four incidents where speeding vehicles have crashed into parked cars along our street - Mapmaker Lane, between Ropemaker Lane and Bowsprit Lane, in Battery Point Subdivision. All these incidents, not just the four in the last year, but previous ones as well, happen within the 200 block of Mapmaker Lane at the curve. Drivers are speeding and not paying attention. Each incident has not only damaged vehicles and taken out our mailboxes but has also shattered our peace of mind. A constant worry now looms: what if the next vehicle doesn't just hit a mailbox or a parked car, but a child? Children of all ages walk daily to and from  the elementary, middle, and high schools down Mapmaker Lane due to no sidewalks. Some children, the brave ones, ride their bicycles or skateboards. It is a half mile stretch of road from the 200 block, where all these incidents have happened, to the elementary school. Even though the street is not marked as a “school zone” it still very much is.

Mapmaker Lane was recently repaved and had walking/parking lanes painted along each side of the road and a double yellow line to distinguish driving lanes. Ultimately this has only made cars drive faster down the road due to being so smooth. Not even a full week after the paving was completed, we had an accident at this same curve on Mapmaker Lane causing damage yet again to a resident’s vehicle, yard and two mailboxes.

The dangers posed by reckless speeding in residential areas are not just limited to property damages but, more critically, endangers lives. It's an urgent matter of public safety. Speed humps have proven to be an effective deterrent in numerous communities facing similar issues. These simple structures can significantly reduce speed, ensuring that our neighborhood is safe for children, pedestrians, and residents alike.

Installing speed humps on Mapmaker Lane is not just a preventative measure but a moral imperative. It's about protecting our community and safeguarding our streets and loved ones.

Safety should never be a secondary concern. By installing speed humps, we reinforce our commitment to making Battery Point a safer place for everyone and everything.
