I am a principal at St Francis College Prep in Benoni and am concerned about the well being of my pupils and staff. The little children spend half of the school day in dark classrooms. Our tuckshop and aftercare battle to serve warm food. My teachers do not even manage to have a warm beverage at break. Which is really needed after hours in the classroom. We fall behind with some work as we are unable to use the computer lab as well as copying general worksheets/assessments and homework sheets. We invested in technology in classrooms but with no power this important learing tool is rendered useless. Recently due to lack of power, we suffered a burglary and our admin block including the entire kitchen was 'cleaned out'! I try to motivate my staff and try to remain positive but it is getting more and more difficult. Crime in the area requires us having to employ security guards on site to watch over the staff, pupils and property. Thus placing financial constraints on budgets instead of that money being used to further educate the future leaders of our country. It is quite sad really to hear the little ones CHEER as the power comes back on, such happiness but leaves a bitter feeling as electricity should be a basic right. I am appealing to authorities to take our position seriously. St Francis College has been operational since 1989 and never before were we faced with such obstacles as now! I'm a resident of Mackenzie Park, it seems we are subjected to more load shedding than other areas, we always having cable theft issues bi weekly and when the lights come back its always more than 30 minutes later than the scheduled time they have on the app. when there is an issue like the transformer problem we have nearly 10 hours load shedding, then if its a schedule load shedding when the power is restored we are switched off again.Ebrahim Bodiat (Benoni, 2023-07-17)

Sad that the council knows fully when there a 4 hour power outage sufficient time is given to cable theft, there's no security around the vulnerable areas.
