Urgent Maintenance Needed on the N12 (Atlas Road to Kingsway) – Benoni

We, the residents, businesses, and road users of Benoni, call on the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to urgently prioritise the maintenance and safety of the N12 freeway between the Atlas Road interchange and the Kingsway off-ramp, in both directions.

This section of national road infrastructure has deteriorated significantly and is creating serious safety, environmental, and security concerns for motorists, nearby residents, and businesses.

The lack of maintenance has resulted in damaged fencing, overgrown vegetation, blocked drainage systems, poor lighting, and neglected road reserves. These conditions have created security risks for both residents and road users.

There have also been increasing concerns about vagrants sleeping under bridges and inside stormwater drains, which raises serious safety and humanitarian concerns and highlights the urgent need for proper maintenance, monitoring, and management of SANRAL’s road reserve.

We therefore call on SANRAL to urgently:

1. Repair and strengthen fencing

  • Repair damaged fencing along the N12 corridor

  • Replace weak sections with stronger fencing to prevent illegal access

2. Maintain vegetation and road reserves

  • Remove dead trees

  • Trim overgrown trees and vegetation

  • Regularly cut and maintain grass verges

  • Remove illegal dumping and debris

3. Improve drainage infrastructure

  • Inspect and clear all stormwater drains and culverts

  • Ensure stormwater systems remain free of blockages

4. Improve road safety

  • Inspect and repair all lighting

  • Maintain clear road markings

  • Repair damaged safety barriers and road signs

5. Improve monitoring and security

  • Conduct regular patrols along this section of the N12

  • Address illegal access points through damaged fencing

  • Ensure road reserves, bridges, and stormwater infrastructure are regularly inspected

In addition, we request that SANRAL provide the community with a clear maintenance and upgrade plan for this section of the N12 by 31 May.

This route is a critical transport corridor used daily by thousands of commuters and businesses, and proper maintenance is essential for public safety, infrastructure protection, and the wellbeing of surrounding communities.

We urge SANRAL to take immediate action.
