Youth of Poortjie neglected by Government

It has been 20 years down the line since this community was established. Withthe Population nw exceeding 25 000 of which are Unemployed Youth. We only can pride ourselves with 1 High school which is over crowded, this high school is fed by 3 primary schools which is a great problem for this community. The high School is over populated because there is no other High School for the overflow.

Once a young person finishes his/her high school, they are faced with no other option but to sit at home or seek employment at the near mines. Poverty in this area has caused a lot of youth t drop out of school to try to fend for themselves. If all fails, most of them fall back to drugs (Nyaope)and teenage prostitution.

There are no alternatives for the Youth of Poortjie, with huge 2 community Halls which can be viewed as WHITE Elephants as there are no programmes running on those premises, Youth is charged to use Municipal Facilities which leads to lack of interest in sporting activities. The only popular sport is Soccer which is not even supported, there is one soccer field with a lot of thorn trees around the field, for each game of soccer each team must atleast bring 3 new soccer balls in case they get inflatted when they are kicked to the trees. The department of sports  have been engaged on this and till now nothing has been done.

 

This petition seek to raise an awereness how the Government has neglected issues of Youth Development in this area. We have Batho Pele Development Centre, which is the only Centre which seeks to advance this issue, is poorly funded by Social Development. There is deplicating Hospice which has been closed for the last three years, WE DONT NEED A HOSPICE we need TRAINING in different skills and that Hospice can be used for this purpose. 

 

To rub salt on this, we are serviced by Orange Farm, actually all services which should be locally they are more than 25km away from us. Priority has been given to Orange farm at our cost and there is little that has been done in this regard. The Only form of employment is your public sector (CWP, EPWP) and the South Deep and Kloof mines.
