В интервью телеканалу LNT Берзиньш не стал подробно комментировать вопрос о том, следует ли в Латвии отмечать день памяти латышских легионеров. "Игнорировать ничего не надо", — сказал президент. Он также признался, что не видит причин отрицать, что многие люди пожертвовали жизнями ради будущего Латвии. Глава государства подчеркнул, что не видит никакой угрозы от бывших легионеров. Из 50 000 их осталось меньше 500, и это люди старше 90 лет, напомнил он. В 1944 году в германскую армию были принудительно мобилизованы многие жители Латвии. В 1950 году США признали, что латышские легионеры не совершали военных преступлений. Более того, позже их реабилитировал даже Советский Союз. "Считать их преступниками — это за рамками здравого смысла… Вместо этого перед ними надо склонить голову", — сказал президент. Латвия должна разъяснять свою историю международному сообществу, добавил глава государства.
