Help Save the Self-Esteem of the Unchosen Ones

Have you ever been picked last in gym class? Or has your child come home and sat on the couch and asked the question that you had hoped you wouldn't have to hear... "Why am I always picked last to play basketball?" I'm not talking about in a sport that they have chosen to try out for, I'm talking more about the mandatory gym class they have to participate in even though it might not be their strongest suit. There are such strong campaigns against bullying, but isn't this just as bad in some cases? This technique is usually used by P.E. teachers, shouldn't they know better than to put kids in this awkward situation? Being picked last because you're a "loser" or maybe just because you don't have any friends in that class, it can ruin one's self-esteem, it can make one think they're not worthy, it can make one think they're not good enough. Seeing the defeated look on someones face when the captain called out a name that wasn't theirs. All for what? So you can win in an elementary school basketball game that lasts an hour that you get bragging right over for a day and then it's finished. But not for the child who wasn't chosen fast enough because they didn't always catch the ball, they carry around the fact that they weren't good enough for longer than a day. I think we should work together to ban this technique of picking teams and try to help save the self-esteem of the unchosen ones.
