PETITION TO REVERSE DECISION ON THE REPLACEMENT OF ELECTRICITY SERVICE CONNECTION CABLES

Over the past few months, the residents of Ward 88 have witnessed an increase in criminal activity in the area, in particular, the theft and vandalism of electricity service connection cables. A memorandum by the Head of Department for Energy, Mr Thilidzi Thenga, dated 12 April 2022, has made residents liable for the replacement of service connection cables to the tune of R1500 (for first, second and third occurrences), with the possibility of the engineer withholding future replacement if the cable is continuously stolen. Given the cost of living crisis, residents, more especially the poor and elderly, are unable to afford the cost of replacing electricity service connection cables when stolen.
We, the undersigned ratepayers/ homeowners/ residents of Ward 88, Nigel, hereby request the current HOD for Water, Sanitation and Energy, Mr. Tshilidzi Thenga, to reverse/ reconsider this decision with immediate effect, and for the City to consider increasing police visibility around cable hotspot areas to prevent cable theft.
