Scrap the deregistration of vehicles after Rego lapses

Vehicles in New Zealand fall victim to being deregistered if unlicensed for more than 12 months. Other countries do not do this. For example, if you buy an old car/motorcycle in the UK and get it through it's MoT (WoF), then it's fit for the road. Whether a car is fit for the road should be based on its WoF status (condition), not its Rego/licence status (tax). I propose that the notion that a vehicle becomes degregistered after a year without being licensed is abolished. This would have many benefits and would save time, money and resources that could be better used elsewhere.
