Universal Basic Income

Universal Basic Income needs to be implemented to replace the current social assistance payments that fail to meet the basic needs of countless families throughout Canada. UBI would combat intergenerational poverty and intergenerational trauma. By implementing UBI, we would see a reduction in other expenditures, such as healthcare and criminal justice so that we could achieve an equitable society.

The consequences of poverty go beyond the individual level, with food insecurity, poor health outcomes, high stress, low education, and inadequate housing

UBI would allow individuals to achieve social justice and self-determination by having the same opportunities as everyone else. UBI would alleviate many barriers faced by people living in poverty and who are marginalized and ostracized due to race, gender, and ability. UBI would liberate our most vulnerable citizens and provide them with equitable opportunities. UBI would ensure the communities impacted by racism/ colonialism have their basic needs provided to them so that they could focus on healing, as visible minority groups are more likely to live in poverty than White populations (Hou et al., 2020).
