I am signing because the Norwegian Institute is essential to the international support for Greek archaeology and to the vibrant community of scholars in Athens. I had the privilege of attending an important conference there ten years ago on the practice of magic in the ancient world that ended up having an enormous impact on the field, because it brought together archaeologists, philologists and historians.

The value of international schools in archaeology is quite frankly immeasurable. Our understanding of who we are and where we come from - our common heritage - is dependent on the work of such bodies. The sharing and growth of such knowledge depends on interernational contact. The cost of such schools as the Norwegian Institute at Athens is frankly miniscule when set against the overall budget of many universities and governments. Think, for example, of the total cost of the total number of photocopiers in any institution, never mind the paper used on an annual basis in these machines - a mere bagatelle to many administrative offices. Also reflect on William Bruce Cameron, “Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking” (1963): "not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." It will be a tragic loss to intenational schloarship if this institute is closed for the sake of saving what is a relatively small amount of money in overall terms.

If the two universities can no longer afford to pay, the Norwegian government must be made to see the importance of having a cultural presence for Norway, conducting wordl-class reasearch, in a major European city whre so many other foreign Institutes are actuve. Closing the Norwegian Instiutute will represent a loss of prestige for Norway in the eyes of the world.

The Norwegian Institute is a valued contributor to the international archaeological scene in Athens. As a classical archaeologist and member of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens I deplore any penny-pinching that threatens this community and its members.

The foreign institutes in Rome and Athens are vital for the opportunities they give to young scholars to achieve a deep understanding of classical and later cultures. This is a lifeline to historical and Mediterranean studies in Norway, and should not be cut!

I'm signing because the Norwegian Institute at Athens delivers excellent archaeologic research and its close-down would mean a substantial loss to the fields of mediterrranean archaeology.

The contribution of the Norwegian Institute to the history, archaeology of the Aegean area is without measure. It would be EXTREMELY short-sighted to cut funding to this facility. Such a move would be detrimental to Norwegian scholars as well as to the international community. Please reconsider!

Archaeology is a necessary field. The Norwegian Institute has provided valuable insights and research into the science and development of the field. Further, the researchers at the institute are educated and well-versed in their fields. They deserve to practice what they have poured their heart and time into.

The national institutes in Athens are vital research institutions for their own researchers as well as for the international research community in Athens. This is also true for the Norwegian Institute. The state of Norway ought to keep up their position as a research-intensive and global nation by supporting the Norwegian Institute in Athens.

All the foreign institutes in Greece (and elsewhere) are under acute financial pressure but are nonetheless managing to continue ground-breaking research to which international collaboration is fundamental. We cannot lose the Norwegian Institute from this team in the current climate!

This is my third try to sign this petition, and I determined to add my name, so perhaps this time it will work.

As a native of Belgium, a small country that lost its research facilities in Greece, I cannot underscore enough the importance of having such facilities. Research requires access, a foot in the door, a seat at the table, so to speak.

I sincerely hope that Norwegian institute will continue to exist, not just for the Norwegian scholars, but also for the Greeks and for the international community of scholars who try to understand the civilization that brought us democracy, the Parthenon, and Alexander the Great.
