UNIVERSITY OF KALYANI

KALYANI, NADIA

Sir,

With due respect, we, the students of UNIVERSITY OF KALYANI would like to inform you that we have come to know government proposed to schedule the semester exams in July. However, the pandemic scenario of COVID-19 is getting worse in India day by day. So we request you to read our appealing suggestions carefully and take further decisions regarding the semester exams.
There are certain things that we are very much concerned about the scheduled semester exams during this Pandemic.
1) First of all, the exponential increase of current COVID scenario in our country has a direct and heavy impact on us. Our parents are deeply tensed to know such examination routine. Almost 6000 to 7000 new COVID cases are added every single day in India. As of now, according to the experts, we have not even reached the peak of the epidemic. We can not imagine what the situation will be like at the end of June. So, the condition is as terrible as never before.
2) Now many of the students are day scholars. They have to come in contact with various candidates from different districts, different states and abroad. There are high possibilities of transmission. We can not isolate the asymptomatic candidates. As the disease is highly contagious, it is a very tough situation for us to take the exam during this Epidemic.
3) Many students are out of the district, out of the state and also out of the country. They are unable to arrange suitable transportation as transportation through train is cancelled till the end of June. The international borders are not opened yet.
4) Many teachers have tried to complete the syllabus through online classes, we earnestly respect their efforts but unfortunately many students can not afford internet connection for financial reasons and also there are many who can afford it but the internet connection and network are extremely poor in their localities. So even online recharge is also not a plausible option. Therefore, many students could not properly open the apps needed for online classes and they could not attend those classes. Thus, the syllabus should not be considered to have been completed through these online classes.
5) From the previous point, it is evident that examination through online is very difficult for us as many students live in remote areas. There is no proper internet connection. They have to go to the fields and somewhere else for a little network. So this situation is not favourable for a complete Online Examination.
6) The students who are hostel-dwellers had to evacuate the hostel immediately in mid-March as a notice was forwarded by the UGC where the students were told to vacate the hostels for 15 days only. So many students brought home only a few books and copies with them, leaving most of the books at the hostel.
We have some suggestions on how the evaluation can be possible.
i) Our first preference is to delay the semester until the COVID situation is normalised. The normalisation is meant by opening the international borders for flights and our nationwide regular transportation.
ii) Next, our performances or marks of previous semesters are taken into consideration and average them.
iii) Next, our performances or marks of previous semesters and current internal/home assignments are taken into consideration and average them.
iv) Last but not the least, only current internal/home assignments are taken into consideration and evaluate them as semester marks after multiplying with proper credit points.
We request you to go through the above details and make a suitable conclusion.
