Support our local "Comet Swimming Club". Demand they review their decision to give our local "Learn to swim programme" to an International company.

Comets swimming have played a big roll in my 6yr old autistic sons life, in terms of his confidence, learning and swimming skills!! I am all for this!!

We should do good by our community, and stay local!

Emma Mackey (Gisborne, 2023-06-02)

#4

This contract should be local. I went to Comet as a teen and all 3 of my children did. We don't want to see our city turn into a place full of big corporate companies where local businesses are forced out. This is a disgusting move by GDC

Annmaree Barclay (Gisborne, 2023-06-02)

#5

Both of my tamariki learnt to swim at Comet. They are all the better for it. Local people teaching our kids how to be safe around and in water. Support local!

Billy Maxwell (Gisborne, 2023-06-02)

Poor form from GDC to not support this well established, local club. You're our public servants and made a decision your public is not happy with.

Allisa Hall (Gisborne, 2023-06-02)

My child attends comet. Has been for over 3 years. She started with Plunket water confidence classes, and now my grand daughter does as well. They are an awesome club, going above and beyond. They are local. Why give to a international company from out of town! It’s all about money! So much contraversy around this kiwa pools! You got given enough funding! That should be enough. Greed! Not cool at all GDC!

Comet swimming has shown their commitment to the Gisborne region for 65 years and is such a well supported organisation that is typical of a local grass root business. It would be interesting to see the financials on this as to what the difference in the offers were made by the 2

Comet swim club have been working for our community for decades. I think it’s ridiculous that an overseas organise takes the swim contract for the kiwa pools. They don’t know our people or how our people learn. Also this land was gifted by iwi to build our community. Not outsource contracts that can be filled locally.

Tiffany Humphries (Gisborne, 2023-06-02)

Gisborne district council should be supporting local business

Heather Marshall (Gisborne , 2023-06-02)

#31

Absolutely disappointed in this decision. I will continue to support our local swimming clubs and will always have our tamariki with them. But I fear it will be tough to be compete against this multi international company. Don't let this flash company and this flash complex sway us Whānau, keep your tamariki at ELGIN Pools or Enterprise. Kia kaha Comet. We got you, 18 years I have always had a child swimming with you and when I have mokopuna they will be coming your way too!

Vania Ria (Gisborne , 2023-06-02)

#32

We elect the Major and the Council to act responsibly and to make the right decisions on our behalf. They have not done this, supporting local should have been and should always be at the forefront of their decision making regardless. If there are no local options then national businesses surely comes next for consideration. The decision made here absolutely needs to be reviewed and a full explanation as to why and how this has happened.

Preserving Local Identity: Supporting comet swimming club helps preserve the unique identity and character of our community. It fosters a sense of pride and belonging among residents and showcases the talents and achievements of local athletes. GDC should be support our local swimming club not offering it to an international company’s who have no idea about our district, our needs or our tamariki!!

Kylie Johnson (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#160

Our council should be choosing local first and foremost. They should be stimulating our struggling economy

Euan Nelson (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#163

This contract should be awarded to a local community organisation. I do not agree with contract going overseas. Comet have a proven record in providing these services our council should be supporting its community.

Bianca Harris (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#164

Introducing an Australian company will see profit leave our district, Comet are not for profit so give back to the community and people, circular economy. Comet if awarded the Learn to swim would of employed more people and delivered full immersion te reo lessons. Kiwa is suppose to be a community hub for the people of Tairawhiti gifted by the Government The decision that has been made actually divides the Community and Kiwa will not represent a community hub as the council likes to state. Less tamariki will learn to swim at Kiwa as families choose to support their community groups, local swim school and would like to see our region thrive instead of the proceeds go out of our district. This Council is suppose to uplift our community and work for the people that is represents, not cause further deprivation. As a Tairawhiti citizen i want the complex to thrive and see our children, youth, families enjoying the facility that was gifted to the community without having to make this choice.

Cindy Le Compte (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

Glen Sutton (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#170

I support comet not an overseas company. so disappointed in GDC for making this decision and now see no reason to support kiwa pools in future.

Laura Watson (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#173

I'm disappointed with the GDCs decision to give the Kiwa pools swimming contract to an international company instead of our local Comet swimming club who provides an amazing service for our community. They've outgrown their premises and Kiwa pools would have been the perfect fit. In our current economic situation its more important than ever to support local - having had a cash injection by the government for a community facility to then give the swimming contract to someone offshore is ludicrous. GDC, please reverse this decision - ALL of the comet swim school employees, tamariki and adults who are learning to school plus the wider community are feeling very upset by this decision.

Elysha Memon (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#175

This makes zero sense. We have a well established and reputable swim school. Outsourcing to an Australian business to deliver lessons in te reo māori????

Jodie Hodgson (Gisborne , 2023-06-03)

#177

I think the GDC have made a stupid decision, who is ever going to take the GDC seriously now 😡

Kelly Hirst (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#178

The decision is absolutely saddening and not okay!! Support local all the way!

Cassandra Blumfield (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#180

It is better to support local and the Comet swimming Club has been there for locals for years

Gael Watt (GISBORNE, 2023-06-03)

#182

My kids, who are now in their 20's, started their lessons with comet. When a company puts so many years of effort into helping our children learn this important skill, especially with all the water surrounding us, they deserve the opportunity to use local resources above any overseas company. So I'm signing this to say, of they haven't been offered the opportunity, in a reasonable way, then they should be

Jo Cranefield (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#186

It should be going to a local swim club that has been there for as long as I can remember.

Hayley Durston (Gisborne , 2023-06-03)

#188

Support local

Rhonda Jones (Gisborne , 2023-06-03)

#189

It is a disgrace that the contract for the new pools has gone to an out of town company! We love Comet Swimming Club and would love to see them at our new pool complex. When locals work so hard to keep their businesses afloat during covid, natural disasters and a recession it is really just a kick in the guts decision from our council. What a total let down.

Claire Byrne (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#191

The GDC have made a bad decision that needs to be reconsidered

Damon Meade (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#193

I used to work at the Olympic Pools and I feel that Comet Club not only know how to teach kids to swim well in Pools. They also know the local conditions ar sea and river and have a excellent survival skill program in case of flooding. Why would you go international or nationally when Comet will do an excellent job locally.
You should always invest in local businesses first, especially after the bad years Gisborne has had lately.

Susan Kauika (Wanganui , 2023-06-03)

#196

Comet is iconic; they have taught countless Gizzy kids how to swim, including my own. The decision to award the contract to an outsider shows a startling underestimation of the level of respect and trust Comet holds in the local community.

Annie Egan (Gisborne, 2023-06-03)

#197

I support local!

Ellie Parker (GISBORNE , 2023-06-03)
