SAVE TAURANGA BAY & NINE MILE FROM BECOMING A 24/7 INDUSTRIAL TRUCKING ROUTE

It's a special place with penguins, other seabirds and seals. To devastate the area for a short term gain, much of which will, as usual, go elsewhere is vandalism.

Gerald Freeman (Westport, 2021-09-30)

#606

It's too peaceful of an area for big trucks, not to mention the road is way too narrow, there has to be another option.

Andrea Hubert (Carters Beach, 2021-10-01)

#610

This is a special and untouched area, Te Tai Poutini needs to be protected, esp. due to the nesting kororā population.
It would also reduce the experience of the planned Kawatiri Trail, which is vital to improve tourism economy and local recreation in the wider area.

Renee Fleming-White (Ōtepoti Dunedin, 2021-10-01)

I am very concerned for the negative impact that a mine would have firstly for the natural environment (that cannot speak for itself)... little blue penguins, native gecko/lizard, frogs. Native birds and Bush. Potential leaching/run off of toxic fumes from the mine into the air right next to local residents homes, cattle, native flora and fauna. Sound pollution 24/7. I am concerned for the extensive use of a road that has not even been load tested and is build basically on sand therefore could have significant effect f sandrine erosion if trucks are using constantly. I am concerned for the safety of surfers who use the carpark at 9mile, for tourists and residents who also use thr road. And more specifically the corner of the road which adjoins to Tauranga bay beach carpark is not fit for constant large truck use.
The new kawatiri bike trail is already planned to be built right through Okari Road and a mine would ruin the beautiful landscape and be dangerous also to users. We should be moving towards industries that provide work that will help to conserve what's left of this beautiful coastline.

I stongly believe that the West Coast is a place that should be free from any kind of constuction that is detrimental to the environment.

Hilary Peal (Westport, 2021-10-02)

I live on cape road and will be directly affected but the ramifications are multiple

#617

I want NZ to remain a natural sanctuary, and its beauty and habitat not be plundered by commercial thugs for short term gain

Rodney Jones (Katherine, 2021-10-03)

#618

Unbelievable. The planners at the West Coast Regional Council are treating ratepayers with complete contempt in their support of these cowboys. At best they pull the plug or at worse how about Westport Mineral Sands Ltd pay for their own road through their dairy farm. Leave T Bay out of it. Shame on everyone involved in this dirty private business.

B Warren (Charleston, 2021-10-03)

#619

I love those beaches

Such a disruptive and environmentally harmful commercial operation should not be able to operate in such a pristine and ecologically sensitive area of New Zealand.

Max Warren (Waikuku Beach, 2021-10-03)

#623

I'm a frequent visitor to Tauranga Bay so I know the area well. The proposed mine may create jobs but in doing so will wreck an area known for its spectacular beauty. I cannot imagine how the trucking of the sand would not create hazardous road conditions and of course it would also detract from the beauty of the area. The affect on tourism is one thing but spare a very large thought of the folks who live in the area.

Jan Galloway (Christchurch, 2021-10-03)

#624

As a resident of this beautiful coastal region I must object to this proposal on serious environmental concerns. The fact that it is so close to breeding grounds of seals and penguins and the damaged that would be caused. I feel that it should not go Ahead. Please say no to this proposal for the sake of the wildlife and to the thousands of people that enjoy this beautiful Westcoast New Zealand
Kind regards Gareth Bayliss

Gareth Bayliss (Westport, 2021-10-03)

#626

I don't want this wonderful recreational and largely undisturbed area to become a mining area, disturbences for wildlife, sand movements and transport impacts.

Katharina Erdl (Murchison, 2021-10-04)

#627

I think this is a disgrace. It is already well known that there are significant issues with coastal erosion on the west coast. The place is under threat so big business wants to take away nature’s protection. Duh
This is completely consistent with the west coast regional council chairman owning a mining company and openly declaring that he does not care about, or agree with climate change. Those running, and inhabiting, the west coast need to get with the times because the environment is increasingly being sabotaged by big money interests.

David Stenhouse (Waikuku, 2021-10-04)

#635

I don’t want to see this area destroyed by mining.

Shirley Scarlett (Christchurch , 2021-10-05)

#636

I live at Carters beach and came to the region because of the beautifull beaches and surroundings
Mining would just destroy everything. Will never be the same afterwards

Hayden Roberts (Westport , 2021-10-05)

#639

There is no infrastructure for industrial activities and heavy trucking along the proposed sites nor is it desired. It is such a very special and beautiful place, why do people want to give this up? Please protect the natural environment in favour of future generations and stop short term sightings of limit gain for only a few. Let's develop a healthier tourist strategy that can provide sustainable benefit for the people and affected land.

Micha Bodesheim (Westport, 2021-10-06)

#642

Many reasons, safety, pollution, people's enjoyment of a natural recreation area, disturbance to wildlife and potential toxic dust

Shelley Taylor (Westport, 2021-10-06)

#644

I am strongly against a foreign company mining in NZ. Also l am against the proposed frequency and size of trucks on NZ's most scenic coastal road. Residents along the route are entitled to peace and quiet at night and on weekends

Robert Graham (Hokitika, 2021-10-08)

#645

Our family has used this area for recreation for over 50 years. We would hate to see the environmental impact of this project on the surrounding areas. We in no way support mining in this area.

Paul Hattersley (Westport, 2021-10-08)

#648

I love this place it’s paradise we don’t need to ruin it with the noise ems chaos of busy trucks … spend the weekend there if you haven’t stay in one of our beautiful accomodating homes available out there, then you will understand why we should leave it as it is and keep it the same beautiful spot it has always been … please respect the beautiful T bay and the people who truly treasure this place.

Lori Thomas (Westport , 2021-10-10)

#650

As the site is close to our farming property we have concerns for an industrail mining site.

Vicky Couling (Westport, 2021-10-17)

The scenic coastal route from
Westport to the Okari Lagoon is a public good of much greater value to the community long term than the proposed sand mine.
The beautiful coastal landscapes will also have an enduring value to attract tourists to the area, unlike the mine operation which will produce short term profits for a few.
The mine proposal indicates a basic low cost exploitative approach. There does not appear, for example, to have been any consideration of a new mine access to link with Wilsons Lead Road. This would avoid the narrow Okari Road which was never intended for heavy traffic. The WMS proposal concedes that the Okari Road is too narrow for two trucks to pass and suggests this will be avoided by maintaining constant radio communication?
Although I now live in Christchurch I was born and raised in Westport and my family still owns properties at Carters Beach and Cape Foulwind.

Mel Head (Christchurch, 2021-10-19)

#657

I'm signing because the proposal threatens a valuable public asset.

Terry Sumner (Westport, 2021-10-20)

#660

I totally oppose the use of truck and trailer units 24/7 for this proposed operation; specifically along Okari Road through the Taurunga Bay settlement and the stretch along Tauranga Bay Road to Omau. It will have severely negative impacts on this environment of amazing natural beauty. It will endanger Tauranga Bay beach users and road users (including cyclists), as well as having a negative impact on the proposed route of the Kawatiri Coastal Trail in this area.

Ruth Ball (Christchurch, 2021-10-21)

#664

I object to any more mining in our area. It is destructive and unnecessary.

Sue Hattersley (Westport, 2021-10-21)

#667

This is our favorite surf and holiday destination.
We don't agree this is sustainable and good for the environment when we are in a climate emergency.

Olly Black (Wanaka, 2021-10-23)

#668

Not only the mine itself but the trucks (especially on Okari Road and Turanga Bay Road) will have a significant negative effect on the character of the landscape and people's ability to enjoy it

Amy Head (Christchurch, 2021-10-24)

#671

Tauranga Bay is an absolute taonga and should not be desecrated like the Stockton Plateau. Too much of the whenua of the West Coast has been sacrificed for financial gain to the fossil fuel industries such as mining . We don't want our beautiful sand exported to Asia.

Jodi Ellis (Tasman, 2021-10-25)

#672

I believe this area and it’s residents deserve protection from the proposed sand mining.

Paul Wilton (Wanaka, 2021-10-25)

#673

I am signing because of the significant negative impact that this truck route and the mining will have on the environment, the local community, all neighbours to the route and mine, on tourism, the financial burden on local rate payers to maintain roads, and the gross negative impact this will have for protective animals. For a significant financial gain for a very small few this has a massive negative impact on the future of this beautiful untouched region that can’t be taken back once removed. The noise pollution, the constant vibrations, the air pollution from this type of industry is totally unacceptable. Please don’t let this go ahead. Please save our natural resources and our beautiful environment and protect our people and our vulnerable animals and plants. That is our duty as custodians of this beautiful country, not to rape it for the financial gain for a few and how much of that financial profit even stays in NZ ???? We don't have a plan B planet, this is it and it’s our duty to save it!!

Graham Lynne (Wanaka, 2021-10-25)

#676

This is a unique beautiful area of the Coast .This cannot happen the area will
lose so much , nothing to be gained .
Good for Westport but please consider how this project can be managed to preserve the area and protect the wildlife and the serenity .

Chris Blakeley (St Albans, 2021-10-26)

#677

It's pristine and should remain so for future generations.

Bradley Sparrow (Christchurch, 2021-10-30)

#680

I believe the extraction site and proposed access will adversely affect amenity values in the area. This is a pristine spot, please keep it that way.

Bryan Moore (Wanaka, 2021-11-05)

#681

It is inconceivable that this beautiful area could be subjected to the noise pollution and disturbance to the natural environment by this proposed mining operation.

Liz Todhunter (Nelson, 2021-11-07)

I am signing because i own land along 90 mile beach and do not support this application

I am very anti this type of mining on the West Coast, plus, the roadway won't last one month, and it will be stuffed!🙈

Brian Bailey (Christchurch , 2021-11-22)

Keep Tauranga Bay a pristine and valuable resource for wildlife and wilderness spaces.

Jennifer Graham (Westport, 2021-11-22)

Bianca Van Brugge (Waikanae, 2021-11-26)

I grew up there and this idea is insane and damaging to this amazing natural environment and all of its flora and fauna. Leave this area alone.

Ruth Brown (Wanaka, 2021-11-27)

CAROL MILLER (MARLBOROUGH, 2021-12-17)

#698

I'm signing because now is the time we have to fight for untamed nature being a priority, a rare source to protect and even rewilder areas again. Climate change is oh so on the rise and heaps of companies still want more, more money, more customer, more work, more minerals, more sand, more wealth by destroying our beautiful nature- that mining will just become a problem in a few years again.
Get creative, try to create fakesand or other building materials- we have the knowledge to do so without destroying and exploiting another habitat of animal species (and human).

Juliana Daniels (Westport, 2021-12-19)

Mining fragile coastal sand dunes is a totally inappropriate activity in this area. The area is ecologically vulnerable and should be set aside for conservation. Further the mining operation will spoil an area loved for its recreation and amenity values.

#703

They are bastards

Joshua Stewart (Wanaka , 2021-12-26)

#706

Me and my family enjoy the peaceful, natural environment of Tauranga Bay and would not want to see it it disturbed. I also believe maintaining these special places as they are has higher value to the community, local and wider, than the financial benefits of the proposed new industry.

Michael Roberts (Upper Moutere, 2022-01-08)

#709

Under no circumnstances a mine should be established around a recreational and surfing area.
The area of Tauranga bay is a beautiful area with great surf brakes and the seal colony isn't far from it.
I say no to the mine

Pietro Paci (Dunedin, 2022-01-09)

Our Natural Wilderness and Wildlife hold so much more Value than Mining for HMC. Once Paradise is Gone, it is Gone. Never able to be replaced. If that is lost it will effect so many people, businesses, family homes, animals, bugs, ecosystems, etc, etc........just for 1 thing......greed/money. Lets not lose any more of Aotearoa.

Dominic ferretti (Nelson, 2022-03-10)

#727

Tauranga Bay and surrounds are interwoven in memories made growing up in Westport. All the reasons for keeping the environment in its natural state far outway the danger and destruction that will happen when there are 60 tonne trucks every half hour on the narrow Okari & Tauranga Bay Roads.

Jo(Joan) Wynne(Wood) (Christchurch , 2022-03-21)

#728

I have only just heard the bad news about my special place - Tauranga Bay becoming yet another mining wasteland . Why can't it become Awaroa and we all aim to buy it to save it??

Rosalie Souter (Christchurch, 2022-03-22)

#735

I really value this special part of the West Coast, keep it beautiful

Val Grose (Christchurch, 2022-04-21)

#738

This is a beautiful bay for nature & surfing & will be decimated by hundreds of trucks.

Steve Thomas (Titirangi, 2022-05-11)

#739

I am totally opposed to heavy trucks being allowed to use these risds day and night. This is a quiet rural area where people have moved to or built in to escape such noises and traffic.

Julie Benjamin (Auckland, 2022-05-28)

#740

This unique coastal area should be preserved and not put at risk for monetary gain.
